Scripture: Exodus 25: When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.” 2 Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.” 5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.” 6 So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.
Meditation: There will be times in your life when you might get away from regularly worshipping the Lord. The reasons for this can be many; however, the effect of neglecting your faith will always have the same outcome, that is growing cold as well as finding other things to fill the void you created when you stopped seeking the Lord wholeheartedly.
– Moses had been 40 days and nights atop Mount Sinai and the people began looking around for something to pour themselves into. What is striking is the notable contrast between what was happening on the mountain and what the people were doing far below.
– How does one forget God when all you have to do is look up and visibly see the fiery inferno far above you? Now let me make it personal; how is it that we might turn our backs on the God of our salvation? How can we possibly forget the many answers to prayer and the fellowship of worshipping in the church with our brothers and sisters? Yet many do.
– The people, instead of staying focused on what God had done for them already, the 10 plagues of Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, the Pillar of fire by night and cloud by day, the manna from heaven and the water from the rock; instead turned away and began investing themselves in an idol of their own making!
– This is what we do when we pull away from the Blood bought Church, withhold our devotional tithe, quench the Spirit through neglect, and ignore the many signs God gives to us to turn back to Him. Instead, many start investing themselves in all manner of pursuits that give us pleasure and that we can celebrate and find “fulfillment” in. The children of Israel literally said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt”, but how many have said a similar thing in giving homage to the world, the flesh and the devil? The people of God threw off their clothes and engaged in every form of debauchery. Today, many walk away from their faith in pursuit of hedonistic pleasure, because “what I want, is what really matters”! What if Moses came down and said, “That’s okay, it doesn’t matter who you worship, only that you worship”. Tragically, that lie is being proliferated in the church today.
