Power to Overcome Temptation
Scripture Reference 1 Corinthians 2
And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
3 I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.
Life Lesson: You need to know Christian, that God has given you the power and the authority to overcome every temptation! Your victory over temptation is already won in Christ Jesus – make His victory your own today!
How did Jesus overcome temptation, Lk 4:1-13? Answer: Every response Jesus made was based in the Authority of the Word of God. You might say, “That was Jesus. I can’t do that!”
Understand that Jesus was every bit as human as you are, Phil. 2:7-8. His power to overcome temptation was based upon His total reliance on God in all things.
Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit right into a place of testing, Lk 4:1. 1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, 2where for forty days he was tempted by the devil.
The Spirit led Him there, sustained Him there and brought Him home from there the Victor – He can do the same in you!
Get it straight, temptation comes from the world, the flesh and the devil, but as a child of God, the Spirit will lead you into places of testing. Matt. 6:13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one”. This prayer anticipates that God is sovereign over all and that God is able not only to keep us from temptation, but to preserve us in temptation!1 Corinthians 10:13
“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”
You need to be prayed up and filled up if you are going to stand up in the time of temptation. Matt. 26: 41“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
The victory is yours fellow Christian! The choice to live in that victory is also yours! Gal.6:16 “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature”. Not, you might not, but you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature! Now that is a promise we should all stand upon and act upon!
